(* Jan 28, 2010 - edited to add: Ratings for "Blessings In Disguise")

CBS rolled to its usual ratings victory on Friday night, sweeping all three hours of primetime. Led by "Numb3rs," CBS drew 9.05 million viewers and a 5.5 rating/10 share in households for the night. NBC (6.8 million, 4.5/8) finished second. …8 p.m. / CBS: "Ghost Whisperer" (8.6 million viewers, 5.3/9 households) / NBC: "Law & Order" (7.3 million, 4.7/8) / ABC: "Supernanny" (5.4 million, 3.5/6) / FOX: "Bones" rerun (3.9 million, 2.4/4) / The CW: "Smallville" rerun (1.2 million, 0.8/1) / 18-49 leader: "Ghost Whisperer" (2.2)

(television.gearlive.com)

CBS did what CBS normally does on a Friday night: win. The network, thanks to its strong drama lineup, took both the viewers and the demos this weekend.

Ghost Whisperer (2.2/8 in 18-49) raked in 8.6 million.

Dec 18, 2009 News from Steven himself:
(Thank you, Steven!)

Steven will appear on "Ghost Whisperer." The episode title and air date will be announced when it becomes available.

My guess:
The episode title is "Living Nightmare" to air on January 22, 2010, but it's only a guess. I'll keep you updated.

Dec 4, 2009 The official website of the short movie "Refresh" was updated. It includes now a trailer, promotion pictures and behind the scene pictures.

Longer synopsis:

Roger Dean, a successful businessman, has been chronically unhappy for years. Over time, he has attempted a wide range of remedies, some prescribed, some not; some orthodox, some radical, but none have worked for him. At the end of his rope, he approaches PDLAS, a mysterious private company that promises an effective -but irrevocable- solution. He is assured that the company has a 100% success rate, and that he will 'emerge completely refreshed.' What ultimately happens to Roger is of course much, much more than he bargained for.

Oct 25, 2009 According to IMDB, Steven completed another movie, the short movie "Refresh."

Oct 7, 2009 * Steven will appear in the episode "Bad Seed" of the TV series "CSI: Miami" on Monday, October 19, 2009 at 10:00 pm ET/PT on CBS.

He will play Jerry Mackey.

Written by: Brian Davidson
Directed by: Matt Earl Beesley

(TV Guide.com)

Synopsis: A lethal outbreak in Miami that is linked to deadly farming practices is investigated as murder.

Plotline and Casting Call (spoiler alert --> highlight to read):

[JERRY] 45 to 50 years old, the CEO of Baxter Organic Foods, he's a Wall Streeter with an open collar (dressed Miami corporate-casual). Suspected of having guilty knowledge of the spread of the E. Coli virus, Jerry lets his attorney do the talking for him, and appears to be smirkingly convinced that he's above the law -- or that he's covered his tracks really well. Later, when Horatio promises not to press charges, Jerry leans back and spills his guts, revealing that the financial advantages of genetically modified corn outweigh the potential liability of the occasional untraceable outbreak of botulism. Jerry's corporate commitment to "clean, organic" food is just a story he feeds to chumps; he's only interested in profits. A man with his eye on the bottom line, he's just hateful enough to realize his arguments won't charm a jury in civil court ...

(* Oct 20, 2009 - edited to add: bscreview.com, thoughts of the scenes Steven's chacter was involved with, by Scott Parker)

We also are treated to a mini-treatise on modern agriculture courtesy of Warren and, later, the CEO, played by Steven Culp. Mr. Culp must get a lot of casting calls to play a-hole hotshots, because he brings his A Game to this episode. The little snide chuckle as he leaves the station the first time is nicely swallowed at the end, when Horatio pulls out the tape recorder, revealing their entire conversation about "acceptable losses of human life" is okay if it feeds hundreds. Culp's CEO makes the case for modern agriculture: food prices would skyrocket, people would starve, and the most fundamental of all, people don't care where their food comes from. All valid points, to be sure, but he's still an arrogant ass about it.

Apr 17, 2009 Excerpt from an interview with David James Elliott at TV Guide online:

TVGuide.com: It seemed pretty intricate. Were you ever nervous you'd get hurt? [talking about the sword-fight in his new movie Knights of Bloodsteel]

Elliott: Well it's choreographed, so hopefully it comes off like a dance. ... The swords were made of steel and they were sharp. I had one glance off my eyebrow — ripped through my eyebrow and just missed taking my eye out. So I had one mishap, but it's pretty amazing that with all the fights we had, that was the only disaster. Usually in fistfights you get punched in the face. I remember on JAG, Joe Jackson punched Steven Culp and shattered his nose. You know, we were going into our 18th hour of shooting, and they had a sequence where he had to pretend to punch him in the face, and he landed it and they had to take him away in an ambulance.

Steven Culp, who we just saw reprising his role of Rex Van de Camp on Desperate Housewives, guest stars as Will's dad on Privileged (Tuesday, CW, 9 p.m.). It's not the smartest scheduling move to air a new episode opposite both American Idol and the Inauguration but it's a new episode so we should all try to watch.

(* Jan 20, 2009 - edited to add: dailypress.com)

9 p.m. CW "Privileged" Rex Van De Kamp, how we've missed you. "Desperate Housewives" alumnus Steven Culp guest stars in this new episode as Will's (Brian Hallisay) father. Meeting Will's dad and mom (Mary Page Keller) is a welcome distraction for Megan (JoAnna Garcia) from her own family issues, including another disappearance by her mother.

(** Jan 22, 2009 - edited to add)

Seriously, how good is this show? Just the scene when Megan meets Will's father (Steven Culp! For the 2nd time this week!) and assumes he's the butler before being properly introduced was a simple moment but hilariously done.

It was great to see Steven Culp as Will's dad, and his mom is a familiar actress too.

Episode 5.13 - The Best Thing That Ever Could Have Happened - Press Release

THE WOMEN REFLECT ON HOW ONE MAN TOUCHED THEIR LIVES

"The Best Thing That Ever Could Have Happened" - The ladies are given pause by the loss of one man's life on the 100th episode of ABC's "Desperate Housewives," SUNDAY, JANUARY 18 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET).

When neighborhood handyman, Eli Scruggs (Beau Bridges), passes away, the residents of Wisteria Lane come to realize just how much he affected their lives. Gaby recalls how Eli helped her make new friends when she moved in; Lynette remembers how he came to her aide when she was overwhelmed and neglected Penny; Susan reflects on how he was always there for her as a shoulder to cry on each time a man walked out of her life; Edie looks back on their special friendship; and Bree thinks fondly of how a small gesture he once made helped get her to where she is today.

Guest Cast:
Steven Culp and Rex Van de Kamp
Beau Bridges as Eli Scruggs
Christine Estabrook as Martha Huber

(* Jan 6, 2009 - edited to add: picture with Steven but "only" from behind)

(**Jan 20, 2009 - edited to add: tapeworthy.com)

For the 100th episode, they sure spent a lot of time on Beau Bridges (as Eli Scruggs) who magically appears in last weeks episode but seems to have been connected to all the women of Wisteria Lane for years. How convenient.

But I'll let it go for celebratory's sake and the fact that it was all an excuse to flashback to the earlier years when Rex Van de Camp was still alive! (Yay Steven Culp, Oh how I miss you), when Gaby just moved from the runway to Wisteria Lane, when Edie was still just a slut on the block, when Bree wasn't a company, and when Lynette looked harried (well. some things don't really change...). It was fun looking back at it all but it lacked an overwhelming punch that a big show like this could/should have.

[...]

Bree Van De Kamp (Marcia Cross), the quintessential Martha Stewart-esque housewife, presents a calm and collected exterior, but is dealing with the pain of losing her husband, Rex (Steven Culp), the challenge of raising two rebellious children.

Dec 13, 2008 (The Victoria Times Colonist.com)

According to an article by Michael D. Reid in the Victoria, BC Times Colonist, about Rod Hardy Victoria's film commissioner, "Impact" was picked up to air in the USA in 2009!

"... the last project filmed here -- the sci-fi series Impact -- has been picked up by ABC-TV for broadcast next year."

Dec 8, 2008 Unconfirmed sources report that Steven's mini-series "Impact" is postponed until next year due to the fact that they have not found a distributor for the USA yet. They say that it will air in the USA in spring 2009.

Dec 5, 2008 (TV Guide.com) 100th episode of "Desperate Houswives" with Steven

The 100th episode will air 1/18. Beau Bridges plays the neighborhood's longtime handyman Eli, who is found dead on Susan's roof. Each woman will have a flashback to a "pivotal" time in her life when Eli was there. We'll learn he had a connection to the day of Mary Alice's suicide. Rex, Martha, and Mary Alice will appear.

A side has just been released for 5.13 for a "30ish, hot Latin" guy named Oberto or Imberto who was married to one of the women 12 years ago. 12 years ago, Susan was married to Karl (it doesn't sound like her anyway), Bree was married to Rex (it doesn't sound like her anyway), Kat was married to Adam, and Lynette was married to Tom (it doesn't sound like her anyway). Gaby and Carlos were first married 10 years ago, and I don't think they would recast Carlos just to rehash Gablos' theme in S1 (in the side, she wants sex, he'd rather go to the gym). It would be pointless, and besides, Ricardo IS in his thirties. Even if they're revealing that Gaby was married to someone before Carlos, it's still pointless rehash that we've already seen and she's moved so far away from. That leaves Edie, who we know has been married multiple times, and could've been divorced just before the show began. I think it's her.

Dec 4, 2008 Steven is back on "Desperate Houswives" for the 100th episode

"Desperate Housewives" will air its 100th episode this season!

5-13 (Episode 100) "The Best Thing That Ever Could Have Happened" airs Jan 18, 2009

Beau Bridges guest stars as Eli, the neighborhood handyman who's found dead on Susan's roof. The women of Wisteria Lane will recall significant moments from when Eli was present, including the day Mary Alice killed herself.

THE 50 BEST EPISODES OF 2007: #20-11
By Brian Ford Sullivan

It's time once again for our annual list of the 50 best episodes of the past year.

Rebecca, a gifted teenage pianist, has turned to meth to cope with the pressures in her life. Her father, who has been reluctantly supporting her habit out of fear of losing her, requests William's help. William and his team face an unexpected challenge in Rebecca's mother, whose control issues have influenced her daughter's neuroses. As Rebecca spirals out of control--"dating" a 50-year-old man for drug money and stealing from neighbors--William realizes that, in order to save her, he must first heal her family.

Guest stars: Kelly Lynch ("The L Word"), Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives"), Patrick Fabian ("Veronica Mars") and Rooney Mara ("Women's Murder Club".)

(June 16, 2009 - edited to add: Review)

Steven Culp and Kelly Lynch guest starred in The Cleaner: Rebecca. This was another solid episode with a lot of drama to it which I enjoyed watching. Both Culp and Lynch are excellent performers and they bring a lot to the table. Lynch is especially riveting here as a the mother of a brilliant pianist who wants the absolute best for her daughter. She plays the piano, too, and always wanted the greatness that her daughter possesses. This actually puts her at odds with her daughter because the daughter doesn't want to be a performing pianist. This is way the daughter ends up an addict. Her dreams and desires are being ignored because of her musical talents.

Culp and Lynch make this show with their acting talents.

May 28, 2008 According to a blog entry, it looks like as if Steven will be "only" in the pilot of the new series "The Mentalist" :(

These are my first impressions of the network pilots, usually based on unfinished or partially finished screeners. Many of the pilots will undergo reworking, recasting and, in some cases, top-to-bottom reshooting or reconceptualization. Many of the complains I have about the pilots are things that the networks already know, details that are already undergoing alterations. But anyway, here are my first impressions of "The Mentalist":

[...]

Baker is perfectly cast here, since he's got very expressive eyes and the point of the whole show is that his character keeps noticing things and the camera keeps cutting back to him squinting and processing data. I've never seen more insert shots in my life, because for this guy, life is just cluttered with clues. The show's main cast -- featuring Robin Tunney, Owain Yeoman, Tim Kang and a miscast Amanda Righetti -- is strong and the guest cast is outrageously guest star laden. If you blow out Steven Culp, Gail O'Grady, Jeffrey Nordling, Zeljko Ivanek and Tim Guinee in a single episode, how can you hope to make it through three or four seasons?!?!?

It's been a while since CBS effectively launched a show with tonal variation and "The Mentalist" suffers from being far too serious for its own good.

May 24, 2008 According to IMDB Steven will be part of the new series "The Mentalist" that premieres this fall, on September 23, 2008 at 9pm ET/PT on CBS.

Studio: Warner bros. TV

Filming Locations: Glendale, California, USA

Producers: Bruno Heller ("Rome"), David Nutter ("Band of Brothers")

Synopsis: A mentalist (Simon Baker) turns private investigator uses his powers of observation to aid police investigations.

Venue: Breckenridge Theatre
Date: Friday Jun 6th
Time: 9:00 pm

(May 8, 2008, SummitDaily.com, Summer film preview, by Leslie Brefeld)

"Leaving Barstow," Drama. 89 min.

On the precipice of adulthood, high school senior Andrew faces the decisions of an 18-year-old — choosing a college, finding love, leaving his family — with a sometimes stable, sometimes not, support system.

Andrew, the main character, plays opposite his mother, Sandra — a once young mother now in a sad rut. When the film begins, it shows a need to escape, and follows a period of loneliness experienced in different ways by most of the people in Andrew's life. Andrew is able to keep his head above water and, in that way, keeps the story from getting too down also.

This is an indie movie to the height of perfection, which nudged me to ponder — what is the difference between mainstream and independent films?

I suppose it comes down to the fact that sponsors affect a film, and indie movies steer clear of that. Watching "Leaving Barstow," there was a real story, not just manipulated situations. It was viewing art.

May 7, 2008 Newport Beach Film Fest has announced Audience Award winners at the 2008 Newport Beach Film Festival blog:

Feb 8, 2008 Steven and other members of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) were seen on the WGA picket line supporting the writers in their strike.

(Inrich.com, by Cynthia McMullen)

Picket line's a pain, but it's not without its perks

Hopewell native Kathy Easterling -- the Richmond area's "Jeopardy!" connection -- reports from the CBS picket line in Los Angeles.

Easterling hasn't forgotten her roots. She e-mailed her mother, Cholly Easterling, to let her know that a Hopewell question was scheduled last week to appear in the Hail to the Chief category.

"We taped this particular show before the strike," she wrote.

Easterling's mother says her daughter, a writer with the popular syndicated game show, has been on strike with the Writers Guild of America, West, since early November.

"This has been one of the defining moments of my life," Easterling said by phone from Los Angeles on Monday [Feb 4th]. "We're all going to be proud, for the rest of our lives, that we stood up for what we believed in and refused to be intimidated by these gigantic studios."

In the meantime, she has met some interesting people on the picket line, including Valerie Harper ("Rhoda"), Jon Cryer ("Two and a Half Men"), Bill Nye the Science Guy and fellow Virginians Earl Hamner Jr. ("The Waltons"), and Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives").

Jan 31, 2008 (The Futon Critic.com)

New Date: Medium "Do You Hear What I Hear?" - Monday, February 18, 2008 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on NBC.

Patricia Arquette's brother David Arquette directs an episode where Allison faces a complete loss of hearing after a wealthy, deaf girl is kidnapped -- Guest stars Oscar winner Anjelica Huston, Nancy Travis ("Becker") and STEVEN CULP ("Desperate Housewives")

Allison completely loses her hearing when a wealthy, young deaf girl is kidnapped, so Joe (Jake Weber) steps in to assist with her and investigator Cynthia Keener's (Anjelica Huston) actions on behalf of the parents (guest stars Nancy Travis and Steven Culp).

(Feb 19, 2008 - eddited to add, Entertainment Weekly online, by Alynda Wheat)

Rex Van de Kamp (Steven Culp) is always gonna be the morally shady dude. He's in that class with Adrian Pasdar, Michael Emerson, and William Fichtner — you don't know that they're the bad guy, but the odds are against them. So no huge surprise that he set up the whole stepdaughter kidnapping, only too eager to trade her blood for the red ink his company is hemorrhaging.

Jan 18, 2008 Excerpt from an interview with Sarah Brown at TV Guide online:

TV Guide.com: I've always said that about The Closer: that sometimes they tip their hand with the caliber of actor they bring on for a guest spot.

Sarah Brown:
Yeah, but Steve Culp played the attorney, and he's brilliant and well-used and one of my favorite actors in the world, and he didn't do the crime. The guy that played my husband, also — a fine, fine actor. You know, that's the best set I have ever worked on in terms of the kindnesses.

Dec 12, 2007 At the beginning of this week, Steven was seen supporting the Writers Guild of America strike in Los Angeles, according to the web blog of Mark Verheiden, writer/co-executive producer of a.o. the TV series Battlestar Galactica:

Tuesday, December 11, 2007: WGA Strike - Days 35, 36, 37:

"I don't know about days 35 and 36 (Monday required my attentions elsewhere), but days 37 was friggin' cold. It was a brr-chilly 45 degrees when we started, much warmed by the time we ended. A tip o' the hat to thespian Steven Culp who joined our line this morning, and to all those who offered friendly honks and waves."

- Even though Mark Verheiden mentioned Tuesday as the day he had seen Steven, another source stated that Steven joined the picket lines at the Paramount gates on Monday, WGA's 'Star Trek' day. - No matter what day he chose to show his support for the writers' strike, his fans think it's great!

Nov 28, 2007 A preview of the "Boston Legal" episode with Steven can be found here. Steven is seen at 0:13 sec.

Nov 19, 2007 (ABC Press Release)

Boston Legal: "Oral Contracts" - Tuesday, December 4, 2007 (10:00-11:00 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Denny Crance is arrested under unusual circumstances and asks Alan Shore to defend him, and Shirley Schmidt takes on the case of a shock Jock fired for making an inappropriate comment on the air, on ABC's "BOSTON LEGAL" -- "Oral Contracts" was written by David E. Kelley and directed by Mike Listo.

Guest starring (a.o.): Steven Culp as A.D.A. Norman Wilson.

(A.D.A. - Assistant District Attorney)

(Dec 4, 2007 - edited to add: Zap2it.com, review of the storyline Steven's chacter was involved with, by Liz Pardue)

Denny Crane vs. the Wide Stance: Denny, much to his dismay, gets busted in a courtroom bathroom for soliciting gay sex from an undercover officer. Apparently, trying to relieve oneself while constipated and soliciting gay bathroom sex share many of the same signals. Though I didn't notice any waving of fingers under the stall divider, Denny certainly did have a wide stance. At any rate, Denny insists upon fighting it out in court rather than quietly pleading guilty to a lesser charge, putting a lot of pressure on Alan to win the case. (And Paul Lewiston is back for the week! With a beard!) The assistant DA is played by Steven Culp, making me miss Rex on Desperate Housewives all the more. Despite a terrible turn on the stand in his own defense in which his "sleepovers" with Alan are brought up, Denny gets off with Alan's help (I can't even pretend there was no pun intended there). Which is just as well--the irony of his being brought down for gay solicitation after getting off scott free for actually soliciting a prostitute would be too much for even me to bear. And can I just point out that I really, really want the phrase "getting Larry Craig-ed" to make its way into our lexicon?

Oct 31, 2007 Regarding the 100th episode of "NCIS" - "Chimera" with Steven:

CBS's unheralded NCIS continued to pull in audiences, averaging a 10.4/17.

NCIS: The popular, offbeat procedural marks its 100th episode with a story in which the team finds itself in danger while investigating a case on an abandoned ship. Steven Culp (Desperate Housewives, Traveler) is a guest star.

Oct 6, 2007 From an interview with Peter Paige, the director of the movie Leaving Barstow:

Peter: [...] I just directed a movie that I'm cutting right now, it's called "Leaving Barstow.' Michelle Clooney is one of the leads, a kid named Kevin Sheridan who wrote the film stars in it, Steven Culp is in it and Ryan Carnes. It's good stuff. It's very charming and I'm very excited about it.'

Sep 28, 2007 At TV Guide.com David DiGilio (creator of Traveler) made his final entry ("Closure") in his David's Traveler Blog.

Here the most relevant parts:

Hello Porters, fans of Traveler, and any folks who may have randomly found this page. First off, on behalf of the cast, writers, and everyone involved in Traveler, I want to thank all those who fought so hard over the past two months to get our show back on the air. It was inspiring to see your effort and devotion. And you fought valiantly. But, in the end, I think the same thing that doomed our show — lack of publicity — also made it impossible to muster the kind of numbers needed to save it. So, while I will never forget the great — albeit frustrating — experience of Traveler, the time has come for all of us to move on to new season passes, new webpage bookmarks, and new "save the show" campaigns, as I'm sure there will be some deserving series this fall that will get the short end of the marketing/ratings stick. But before I get to your much-deserved (and lengthy) Traveler answers, I also wanted to say that it's been a blast interacting with you here and on the Traveler IMDb message board. Speaking with you and answering your questions was the best and most fulfilling part of the show's summer season. I hope our discussions can continue with my next show, DARWIN'S LAW, a one-hour action comedy about a CIA hitman who becomes a homicide detective, which you will hopefully see on ABC (yes, I aim to woo all angry Porters back to the network) in the fall of '08. Now, in my efforts to provide closure before people have completely forgotten what happened in our fun and fast 8-episode run, I offer this final blog entry… the once promised and now delivered closure that you guys deserve.

Q7: What happens to Chambers and Marlow?
To be sure, the Season 2 premiere would have picked up their story in the present day. Chambers realizes that Marlow was the one who called his cell phone, and after a major cat and mouse chase through the FBI field office, Marlow would disappear. Three months later, she's also gone underground, and the media has been sold a story that she was in fact in collusion with Will, Jay, and Tyler, and she helped them escape New York. Now, Marlow is on her own hunt to find out how Chambers was involved in the Drexler bombing. Meanwhile, Chambers has been promoted to Head of the entire New York Field Office. Everything is going great, except for the fact that Chambers' daughter, remember the one mentioned in season 1, becomes suspicious of her father's involvement in the Drexler conspiracy. His daughter, another new character for Season 2, would eventually become convinced that her father had framed Jay, Tyler, and Will. And when the boys resurface, she would reach out to them, eventually becoming a new love interest for Tyler. The Fourth Branch would learn of Chambers' daughter's indiscretion. And Jack Freed's mother, the woman now pulling the strings, would tell Chambers that his daughter would have to be removed. Through flashback, we would learn that Chambers faced the same situation when he was stationed in Israel. His wife discovered he was pulling off covert raids, kidnapping Palestinian soldiers on behalf of the Branch. And that time, he sacrificed his wife in hopes that it would help return his family to prominence in the Branch. This time, though, Chambers will choose his child over his loyalty to the cause, allowing one of our great villains to end his arc on a redemptive moment.

Season 2:

In Season 2 [...] Jay, Tyler, and Will set out on a journey to find and expose members of the society, and this time they will have the help of Agent Marlow, who wants revenge for her partner's murder. The return of Tyler's brother, leads Tyler's murder. And Marlow will ultimately fall at the hands of her former boss Chambers.

The End

Synopsis of "Leaving Barstow"

Eighteen year old Andrew Dayton is college material but seems to have given in to inertia and has apparently decided to remain in Barstow with his needy, lonely, mother, Sandra, his low level Barnes and Noble job, and no future or girlfriend in sight. However, circumstances conspire to galvanize him to action, made all the more impelling when he learns his best friend Carlos retrieved Andrew's college application to UCLA from the garbage and sent it in.

Sep 5, 2007 According to the NCIS-CBS mailing list, Steven is currently filming the 100th episode of NCIS. The episode is called "Chimera" and is scheduled to air on Oct 30, 2007.

Harriet: "Making our 100th Episode really special is the appearance of Steven Culp as Guest Star." -->

Sep 1, 2007 According to IMDB Steven will play the teacher Mr. Johns in the new movie "Leaving Barstow"

Genre: Drama

Directed by: Peter Paige
Produced by: Kevin J. Sheridan

And yes, it has been confirmed:

Jayson Crothers, the principal photographer on "Leaving Barstow," wrote in his blog:

It's a small, quiet character-driven story - very dialogue heavy and entirely performance based, but the director has an extremely strong and distinct visual tone in mind. We're shooting 106 pages in 18 days, so it'll be a fast shoot.

Day 6: We shot one of my favorite scenes today with our lead [Kevin Sheridan] and Steven Culp (from Desperate Housewives and The West Wing) - working with really great actors (both Kevin and Steven were really amazing in this scene together) gets me energized and the performances were really stunning - I think it was some of my most dynamic work in this scene and Peter [Paige] and I did some exciting blocking with the camera, starting people in wide-shots, bringing them into very dirty OTS's, and then further bringing them into extreme close ups with a lot of energy created in camera.

The Closer: "Till Death Do Us Part, part one" - Monday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Brenda and the PHD are under the microscope while getting to the bottom of a case involving a high-profile divorce attorney who was found dead in his swimming pool.

Guest Star (a.o.): Steven Culp - Lucas Cordry

(Sep 4, 2007 - edited to add: roadslesstravelledby.blogspot.com)

Kudos to Steven Culp for playing a great adversary to Kyra Sedgwick's Brenda in this episode. If you're going to send someone into a head-to-head clash with Brenda Lee Johnson, then Steven Culp is probably the guy to send. Culp's been a great actor on several hit shows (West Wing, JAG, Traveler to name a few; and Desperate Housewives even though I don't watch that one); and he was great in The Closer too. At episode's end, he seemed to have the upper hand on Brenda, but I'm looking forward to that changing next week.

The Closer: "Till Death Do Us Part, part two" - Monday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. (ET/PT)

Testimony continues in case of the death of a high-profile divorce lawyer as THE CLOSER ends its summer run of new episodes.

Racing against the clock, Brenda confronts the unbreakable alibi of her prime suspect, and must consider if she's accused the wrong person of murder.  Meanwhile, her argument with Fritz over their future together reaches its final conclusion.

Guest Star (a.o.): Steven Culp - Lucas Cordry

(You want to take a look at Lucas Cordry, click here.)

(Sep 11, 2007 - edited to add: roadslesstravelledby.blogspot.com)

As this episode returned to the squad room and moved away from the courtroom there wasn't much for Steven Culp (as the defense attorney) to do. That was unfortunate, but I won't complain too much because it gave some screen time to the grand devil of all guest stars: Fredric Lehne. Lehne played the corrupt alibi Topper Barnes.

(TV Jots.com)

The two-parter is notable for several other guest stars, as well. Steven Culp, who is in everything these days, it appears, plays hard-hitting defense attorney Lucas Cordry. Culp is known for his work in many film and television projects, of course, most recently including his turns as Bree Van De Kamp's murdered first husband Rex in Desperate Housewives and deceitful head FBI Special Agent Fred Chambers in the best new series this summer that will probably never return, Traveler.

A fan campaign is under way to resurrect ABC's Traveler on TNT. Visit Porters-and-Soldiers.com for more information.

Aug 20, 2007 Message from Dave DiGilio, creator of 'Traveler', posted on the IMDB message board:

I will hold off until September 19th to post the blog. That will be two months since the last on-air episode. I think if there is no traction to keep the show going after that, we all need to accept the fate. But if you're up for the campaign, get creative in terms of garnering media attention. And as always, stay positive. The networks respond to kind fans a lot better than they do to angry ones.

Aug 16, 2007 (TV Guide.com by Matt Webb Mitovich)

PS. to Traveler fans: I spoke to Steven Culp today, and he let slip an interesting spoiler about the Fourth Branch. Watch for that full Q&A on Sept. 3, when Culp guests on The Closer.

Aug 16, 2007 Message from Dave DiGilio, creator of 'Traveler', posted on the IMDB message board:

Hey, Guys. A couple of people have asked for an update, so I made another attempt to find out what's happening at ABC.

From my recent emails with ABC execs, I sadly do not believe that ABC is going to change their minds. Everyone who worked on TRAVELER thanks you the fans for your support and devotion. It was the best reward we got for making the show. In the end, I think the same thing that ultimately doomed our show -- lack of publicity -- also hurt the efforts to save it. Without major media outlet promotion, it's just impossible to generate mass awareness. I do not believe that ABC will make an official cancellation announcement, but I know from their responses that things are official.

I will be writing up the "answers" blog this weekend and posting it on TV Guide.com early next week. I am still hoping for a DVD release, but rather than wait to include the answers with that, I want to give you guys the closure that you deserve.

Again, this has been a wild ride. And I'm happy that I got a chance to interact and share some of my thoughts, frustrations, and hopes with you. My thanks go out to all of the Porters, superfans, and casual fans of the show. Your efforts to keep us going made it known that our two years of hard work were appreciated.

Aug 4, 2007 (Gate World.net)

Steven will appear in the episode Miller's Crossing of the SciFi series "Stargate Atlantis" as Henry Wallace. Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi wrote in his blog on August 2nd: "By the way, guest star Steven Culp is terrific in this one." Estimated air date is Nov 30, 2007.

Jul 27, 2007 (The Star.com)

Exit Strategy: Traveler's producer says he won't divulge how the show is supposed to end because there's a "save the show" campaign. But is ABC paying attention? This week, the network's entertainment president said the show "ended up being just not quite up to the level we thought it could succeed."

Jul 26, 2007 (Post-Gazette.com)

The creator of ABC's "Traveler" claims he won't reveal the secrets of his show's series finale because a "save the show" campaign "has been noticed at ABC. So, I will wait and see how this plays out."

He needn't wait long. McPherson said the network didn't support the show with a larger marketing/media blitz because they were unhappy with how it turned out.

"We were disappointed in the way that that show creatively developed and ended up being just not to the level that we thought it could succeed," he said, "So it didn't get the kind of support that, you know, we gave some other shows that we believed in a lot more."

Clearly the network had no faith in "Traveler" before it even premiered, so no "save the show" campaign is going to work. No reason not to spill the details now.

(msnbc.msn.com)

Remember the ad blitz showing ads for "Traveler," where two college friends discover they really didn't know a third pal at all? Set to run 13 episodes and canceled after eight, the show is apparently not a favorite of ABC, and don't expect to see any more episodes. "We were disappointed in the way that that show creatively developed and (it) ended up being just not -- not to the level that we thought it could succeed," Mc Pherson said.

Jul 26, 2007 According to IMDB Steven will play Pastor Joe in the new movie "From Within"

Director: Phedon Papamichael
Genre: Horror / Mystery / Thriller

If it's true? I'm not sure. Let's wait until we hear from Steven himself or until the information appears on a more reliable website.

(Jul 1, 2007 - edited to add: Variety.com - nothing about Steven, but about the movie)

Papamichael to direct 'From Within'
Production on thriller begins next month, by Michael Fleming

Phedon Papamichael is set to direct "From Within," an independently financed thriller that will star Thomas Dekker ("Heroes"), Elizabeth Rice, Adam Goldberg and Jake Weber.

Brad Keene ("The Gravedancers") wrote the script.

Production begins next month in Maryland.

Set in a small, God-fearing town, story focuses on a young girl caught between her Christian upbringing and a desire to experience the outside world. Her desire to break free is amplified when residents begin to die suspiciously.

Pic's being financed through a European equity fund. Chris Gibbin and Adrian Butchart produce, and John Moshay and Bumble Ward are exec producers.

Papamichael was the cinematographer of such films as "Walk the Line," "The Pursuit of Happyness" and the James Mangold-directed remake "3:10 to Yuma."

Jul 22, 2007 Message from Dave DiGilio, creator of 'Traveler', posted on the IMDB message board:

I wanted to give you an update on what I know. Many of you have been asking if your efforts have been noticed at ABC. I am happy to report that they have been. I have had several people from the network comment about the "amazing devotion of the TRAVELER fans." These were actually unsolicited remarks, meaning that folks must be talking about the outcry of support you've shown since the finale.

I've also seen people on the boards asking why our cast members are taking other jobs. Well, that's a simple one. Our actors have not been paid for TRAVELER since they finished filming at the end of last year. But they remained under contract to the show until they were released by ABC. So, they missed casting for the last pilot season. And now that they are finally allowed to book gigs again, they are out there getting jobs because they are a talented group. Please know that it's not because they are "abandoning" the show. They all appreciate the love you've shown for their work. But we all have mouths to feed, whether our own or our families'. The good news (for us, not necessarily for them) is that because they were not available last pilot season, they do not have the type of rigid exclusivity contracts which would preclude them from doing any kind of wrap up we might be able to muster.

Lastly, I'm going to heed some of the advice I've read on this board. I am going to hold off on any hasty "wrap it up" blog postings until the dust settles. I am hoping this huge wave of support allows Will, Jay, Tyler, and company to live on in one medium or another, and if we get that to happen, I want to make sure we still have stories to tell.

Jul 20, 2007 (TV Guide.com) This just in....

Exclusive! Housewives Alum Cops Closer Role

Steven Culp, well known for his run as Desperate Housewives' (now dearly departed) Rex and also a central (grr...) figure in ABC's just-concluded Traveler, will guest-star on two episodes of TNT's The Closer, TV Guide.com has learned. Details have yet to come in as to Culp's exact role (spoiler to the Brenda-Fritz romance, hmm?), but his pair of appearances will air some time in September.

Jul 1, 2007 Message from Dave DiGilio, creator of 'Traveler', posted on the IMDB message board:

So, in my efforts to keep you guys fully up to date on the show, I wanted to let you know that the drop-dead date for extending our cast contracts has now officially come and gone. While this does not make the idea of a second season impossible, it certainly places another mountain in our way, as cast contracts would have to be renegotiated.

I continue to fight for the show because I believe in it and I have been motivated by the passion and initiative you all have shown. But we have definitely reached the point in TRAVELER's life where the network is listening more to the fans than the show's creator. I've seen you throw out some very creative ideas for saving the show. It's time to act on them.

Jun 28, 2007 Regarding the sixth episode of Traveler "The Trader":

(PI Feedback.com)

Traveler: viewers: #3, 3.86 million; A18-49: #3, 1.3/4

(Zap2it.com)

"Traveler" earned a 2.6/5 for ABC.

(Media Life Magazine.com)

At 10 p.m. [...] ABC [was] fourth with a 1.3 for "Traveler."

(The Futon Critic.com)

households: 2.7/5, #T11; adults 18-49: 1.3, #12

(Yahoo-Reuters/Hollywood Reporter)

But ABC lost momentum at 10 p.m. with sci-fi drama "Traveler" (3.8 million, 1.3/4), which was down further from last week's 4.5 million and 1.6/5 in adults 18-49.

(entertainmentnow.wordpress.com)

10:00 p.m.: Traveler (2.6/5 HH rating, 3.86M viewers, 1.3/4 A18-49 rating), unfortunately, wasn't able to build from last week's first increase of the season, as it fell off by 620,000 viewers (14%), 13% among households and 19% among adults 18-49. (Update: The final nationals show a little better performance for the show: 2.7/5 HH Rating, 3.94M Viewers and a 1.4/4 A18-49 Rating). I tell ya, it would be great if ABC could somehow find a way to keep this show around, but these ratings certainly aren't helping the cause. Hopefully the season finale has some sort of finality to it.

Jun 25, 2007 At TV Guide.com David DiGilio (creator of Traveler) made a new entry (Four-quadrant Television) in his David's Traveler Blog:

Hey, fellow Travelers! We had a great week both in episode response and in the ratings. All of your hard work promoting the show paid off with a 23-percent ratings increase week-to-week in the 18-to-49 demo. So, a huge thank-you goes out to all the fans who continue to spread the good Traveler word! Please keep it up. The show gets even more fun, action-packed and emotional as we head into the last three episodes of the season. (For more of his blog go to David's Traveler Blog)

Jun 21, 2007 Regarding the fifth episode of Traveler "The Tells":

(PI Feedback.com)

(Zap2it.com)

ABC's "Traveler" scored a 3.0/5

ABC and Univision tied for third at 1.6, ABC for "Traveler" and Univision for "Don Francisco Presenta."

(Variety.com)

Traveler: 1.6/5 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall

(Yahoo-Reuter/Hollywood Reporter)

ABC's sci-fi "Traveler" (4.1 million, 1.3/4) came in third in the 10 p.m. hour.

(The Futon Critic.com)

"Traveler" is Up 10% in Viewers and 23% in Adults 18-49 Over the Prior Week, Continuing to Improve the Hour for ABC

ABC's "Traveler" posted week-to-week increases of 10% in Total Viewers (4.5 million vs. 4.1 million) and 23% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/5 vs. 1.3/4).

Compared to ABC's performance in the hour in the comparable 4 weeks last year (5/31 - 6/21/06), "Traveler" is up on average in both Total Viewers (5.0 million vs. 4.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.7/5 vs. 1.5/4).

(entertainmentnow.wordpress.com)

10:00 p.m.: Traveler (3.0/5 HH rating, 4.41M viewers, 1.6/5 A18-49 rating) registered a much needed boost after three straight weeks of declining ratings.  Most significant was its solid increase among adults 18-49 of 23%.  Anyone else still annoyed a bit by ABC basically dumping this enjoyable and promising series in the summer?  Only three episodes are left to be aired.

Jun 14, 2007 Regarding the fourth episode of Traveler "The Out":

(Zap2it.com)

ABC's "Traveler" came in at 2.9/5.

(Media Life Magazine.com)

ABC was fourth with a 1.3 for "Traveler"

(PI Feedback.com)

Original scripted ABC drama Traveler dipped to 4.12 million viewers and a 1.3/4 among adults 18-49 at 10 p.m.

Message from Dave DiGilio, creator of 'Traveler', posted on the IMDB message board:

Right now, we've been told that TRAVELER is a summer series and you will see all eight episodes of the first season! So don't be afraid to invest in this show. I will make sure you get answers to any dangling questions, even if you have to get them via my blog over at TVguide.com.

The other thing I keep reading is that you think your opinion does not matter unless you have a Nielsen Box. That, my friends, is pure and utter crap. I'm sure you have read about the fans who recently convinced CBS to renew JERICHO after the show was already canceled. You think you are powerless? Not at all.

So, if you like TRAVELER, or if you just want to make sure that not all summer programming must include a panel of judges with a surly Brit, start getting vocal. Tell your friends to catch up on old episodes at ABC.com. Then tell them to tune in next Wednesday for another blow-your-drawers-off episode... two words for you... "The Porter." Seriously, this show is just getting warmed up. Now that Will is alive, things really get crazy.

But lastly, and most importantly, let ABC know that you like this show!!! I am not suggesting that you send 35,000 tons of nuts to ABC headquarters. But I am suggesting that you go back to the era of fan mail. Contact ABC scheduling and show your support. Because right now, all they have to go off is Nielsen boxes. And those Nielsen boxes go off of advertising. And well, there's not a ton of advertising, so there won't be a ton of Nielsen boxes... kind of like the whole chicken & the egg thing.

So keep up the posting. Contact ABC. And start spreading the good TRAVELER word far and wide. We need to reach out to the fans of 24, LOST, HEROES, and JERICHO, the serialized shows that are returning next year. It's up to you guys to make sure we can join them.

Jun 7, 2007 Regarding the third episode of Traveler "New Haven":

(Media Week.com) Second at 10 p.m. was episode three of ABC drama Traveler (4.4/7).

(PI Feedback.com)

Second in the hour was episode three of ABC drama Traveler, viewers: 5.44 million; adults 18-49: 1.8/5

(Zap2it.com)

At 10 p.m. ABC's "Traveler" 3.7/6, was second

(Media Life Magazine.com)

ABC was second with a 1.8 for "Traveler"

(The Futon Critic.com)

ABC's "Traveler" took second place during the 10 o'clock hour in Total Viewers (5.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.8/5). "Traveler" improved the hour for ABC over the same night last year in viewers and young adults (5.3 million & 1.4/4 on 6/7/06).

(entertainmentnow.wordpress.com)

10:00 p.m.: Traveler (3.7/6 HH rating, 5.44M viewers, 1.8/5 A18-49 rating) declined yet again in its third week, hitting a series low with its weekly decline of 840,000 viewers (13%), 12% among households and 14% among adults 18-49. It's a shame ABC saw it necessary to hold the series until the Summer as I find it to be a very enjoyable hour of television.

May 31, 2007 Regarding the pilot and the second episode of Traveler "The Retreat" aired in its timeslot:

(Media Life Magazine.com)

ABC's adventure drama "The Traveler," which had a sneak preview behind "Grey's Anatomy" a few weeks ago, failed to benefit from that exposure. In its timeslot debut, the show placed a distant second at 10 p.m. with a 2.0 18-49 rating, despite being the only original program on the Big Three that hour.

(Zap2it.com)

ABC dropped to fourth with a repeat of "Traveler." [...] A new "Traveler" posted a 4.2/7 for ABC

(The Futon Critic.com)

The repeat of the pilot ranked households: 3.5/6, #13; adults 18-49: 1.6, #12, the second episode in its new time slot raned households: 4.2/7, #8; adults 18-49: 2.1, #8

Building on its 9 o'clock lead-in by 1.4 million viewers and by 40% in young adults (replay of "Traveler" pilot episode = 4.9 million & 1.5/4), the time period premiere of ABC's "Traveler" took second place at 10:00 p.m. in Total Viewers (6.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.1/6).

Versus its performance in the hour on the year-ago evening with an original episode and time period premiere of "Commander in Chief" (5.5 million & 1.6/4 on 5/31/06), "Traveler" boosted ABC's results in the time slot by 15% in Total Viewers and by 31% in Adults 18-49.

(entertainmentnow.wordpress.com)

# 9:00 p.m.: A repeat of the series premiere of Traveler (3.4/6 HH rating, 4.99M viewers, 1.6/5 A18-49 rating) was only so-so, but for a repeat, it wasn't too bad. American Inventor returns for another season in this time slot next week.

# 10:00 p.m.: A new episode of Traveler (4.2/7 HH rating, 6.20M viewers, 2.1/6 A18-49 rating) expectedly improved upon its repeat lead-in, but fell a good amount from its last newly aired episode which was aired as a sneak preview after an episode of Grey's Anatomy. Decline was at 2.41M viewers (28%), 29% among households and 40% among adults 18-49. Even though it seems very apparent that ABC is just burning off the series in these summer weeks, if episodes continue to perform at this rate, they should be very content as ratings will equal or exceed fall/mid-season programming (at least in terms of households and viewers).

The pilot of Traveler will be repeated at **9pm** on May 30th with the 2nd episode airing right after at 10pm

May 12, 2007 Regarding the preview of the pilot of Traveler:

(The Hollywood Reporter)

A special preview of the drama "Traveler" (8.8 million, 3.6/10) failed to generate much enthusiasm on ABC, coming in third place at 10 p.m. against the season finale of "Without a Trace" (14.4 million, 3.9/11) and "ER" (9.2 million, 3.8/11). "Traveler" was 14% below the average set by "October Road," the previous occupant in the time period. It did however win the hour in adults 18-34, women 18-49 and women 18-34.

(Mediaweek online)

Top honors at 10 p.m. went to the season-finale of CBS' Without a Trace at a 10.5/17 in its former time period. Second was NBC's deteriorating ER (6.9/11), followed by the lackluster preview of ABC drama Traveler at a 6.6/11. Comparatively, Traveler held only 50 percent of the Grey's Anatomy lead-in, while dipping by 19 percent (7.3/12 to 5.9/10) in the second half-hour. A repeat of the Traveler pilot will move into its regularly scheduled Wednesday 10 p.m. tome period on May 30.

(Zap2it.com)

At 10 p.m., the season finale of "Without a Trace" posted a 9.9/17 for CBS. NBC finished second with "ER," 6.2/11, and a preview showing of "Traveler" on ABC scored a 6.1/11.

(timesunion.com)

ABC won the most viewers aged 18 to 49, despite a poor showing for the summer series "Traveler"

(The Futon Critic.com)

A sneak preview airing of ABC's "Traveler" ranked No. 1 during the 10 o'clock hour -- against competition including CBS' season finale of "Without a Trace" and NBC's "ER" -- among Adults 18-34 (3.2/10), Women 18-49 (5.1/14) and Women 18-34 (4.5/13). In fact "Traveler" ranked as the No. 2 program of the night with Women 18-34, behind only "Grey's Anatomy."

"Traveler" will premiere in its regular Wednesday 10:00 p.m. time period on May 30, 2007, following the 2-hour series debut of ABC's "The Next Best Thing."

10:00 p.m.: A special preview of the pilot episode of Traveler (6.1/11 HH rating, 8.88M viewers, 3.6/10 A18-49 rating) didn't get off to a very good start, which is unfortunate because I thought this was one of ABC's strongest pilots. The show had horrible retention rates: 48% among households, 47% among viewers and 48% among adults 18-49. Having a two-week window between now and the show's time period debut on May 30th isn't going to help things. It appears now, more than ever, that this is just going to be a summer burn off. Shame, because the show does have potential.

ABC has also set a piece of its summer lineup, which includes another scripted series originally slated for an earlier premiere. The drama "Traveler" will open on Wednesday, May 30, a few days after the official end of the 2006-07 season.

"Traveler," which was initially set to be a midseason show, centers on two friends (Logan Marshall-Green, "The O.C.," and Matthew Bomer, "Flightplan") who are framed for a terrorist bombing -- possibly by their buddy Will Traveler (Aaron Stanford, "X-Men"). They go underground, trying to clear their names while figuring out how Will is involved.

Steven Culp ("Desperate Housewives"), Viola Davis (CBS' "Jesse Stone" movies) and William Sadler ("Wonderfalls") also star.

Dec 14, 2006 Steven Returns to Desperate Housewives

(TV Guide.com)

They're always in the shadow of their female costars, but the men of Desperate Housewives may finally be taking center stage. Executive producer Marc Cherry is considering a male narrator for a very special episode that would focus mostly on the men of Wisteria Lane. "The whole show would be told from a male point of view," Cherry tells TV Guide.

The narrator will be DH's favorite dead husband, Rex Van De Kamp. "I was sitting in a makeup chair on the set of my new show, [ABC's mid-season series] Traveler, and my cell phone rang," says Steven Culp, who played Rex. "It was Marc. He told me he wanted me to be the narrator. I said fabulous. They could change their minds, but I hope not." Should Culp need any pointers, regular narrator Brenda Strong is available. "I'm waiting for the phone call from Steven saying, 'Oh, my god, is that what you do? It's a lot harder than I thought,'" Strong told TV Guide.com the other day. "I, for one, am going to be really curious to see it."

(Extra.com)

"Extra" spoke to "Desperate Housewives" creator and executive producer Marc Cherry, who dished that just in time for Valentine's Day, the hit ABC show will air an episode in which the story will be told from a male's point of view.

Marcia Cross' character's dead husband, Rex (played by actor Steven Culp), will voice the story and every detail of Wisteria Lane will be played out through his eyes.

(Media Village.com)

Those cool ideas include an upcoming episode focused on the men of Wisteria Lane, narrated not by the deceased Mary Alice but by Bree's late husband, Rex. "It's going to be told from all the guys' point of view," Cherry says. "That's going to be a real fun episode. I don't know that it will have the impact of the hostage episode but I think people will get a really big kick out of it because it's different."

The idea to bring back Rex, who died at the end of season one, started with one of the housewives. "Teri Hatcher was the one who said to me at the end of season one, 'It's a shame now that Rex has died that he can't narrate,'" Cherry says. "I thought that was interesting. Steven Culp [the actor who played Rex] and I have kept in contact so I called him and he thought it was a fun idea."

Desperate Househusbands

I guess it makes sense, if you're going to make a very special episode of Desperate Housewives from the men's point of view, to use Rex Van De Kamp (Steven Culp, pictured, with Marcia Cross and Hunter Allen) as your deceased narrator. Still, do we really care about the men's perspective on DH? Do the guys on this show have rich inner lives that have gone previously unexplored? Except for the mysterious Orson (and maybe the amnesiac Mike), probably not. Much as I would enjoy watching unlikely bachelor-pad roomies Mike and Carlos throwing a beer blast, I wonder what the deceased Rex can tell us about the lives of Wisteria Lane's men.

Steven Culp, who played Desperate Housewives' Rex Van De Kamp, is to make an unexpected return to the programme.

The actor has reportedly been lined up to narrate an upcoming male-orientated episode of the current season, meaning resident narrator Mary Alice (Brenda Strong) would be sidelined for the episode.

Culp's character was bumped off by his wife Bree's (Marcia Cross) obsessed stalker George Williams (Roger Bart) at the end of the first season.

ABC has reduced the order for the midseason drama "Traveler" from 13 to eight episodes, including the pilot.

(Variety.com)

Meanwhile, ABC also confirmed Thursday that the WBTV-produced "Traveler," which had been given a 13-episode midseason order, will instead produce eight episodes (including the pilot) for its first cycle.

Alphabet decided it only had room on its spring schedule for an eight-episode arc of the skein, and asked WBTV to produce five fewer segs. Because of the serialized nature of the skein, ABC wanted to give producers a chance to wrap up storylines for the first season, rather than leaving viewers hanging in the event the show doesn't make it to a second season.

Wisteria flashbacks are hair apparent - 'Housewives': That '90s show

Sunday's Desperate Housewives season finale (9 p.m. ET/PT) will take the women and men back in time to their first meetings with Mary Alice Young on Wisteria Lane.

Mary Alice (Brenda Strong) welcomes each of the families to the neighborhood, beginning in 1994 with the arrival of Susan, then-husband Karl and their 2-year-old daughter, Julie. The following year welcomes Bree, Rex and 6-year-old Andrew. A 2002 flashback sees frisky newlyweds Gabrielle and Carlos moving to Fairview.

This required the show's hair and makeup wizards to make the mostly fortysomething actors appear younger. To pull off the time warps, less makeup was applied, and all the flashbacks were shot through filters to soften facial lines and look vintage.

Key hairstylist Gabor Heiligenberg used hairpieces on male cast members Richard Burgi (Karl) and returning actor Steven Culp (Rex). "Small little custom-made hairpieces blended and glued down to their hairlines undoes the progression of male hair loss by bringing their hairlines forward," Heiligenberg explains. "It's a subtle process that shaves 10 years off." Shades of gray were dyed away.

Marcia Cross' style, he says, "reflects a much more relaxed Bree. It's not that tight flip that you're used to seeing on her. She's not as wound-up yet."

Film Shot Here Nets Festival Accolades by Lewis Taylor

It's been nearly two years since filming wrapped up on "The Sisters," the $5.5 million drama shot in Eugene, and although the movie has yet to be released in theaters, it's already generating buzz and picking up awards at film festivals across the country.

"I always believed in it, but I think maybe some of the awards and expectations (we had) have come a little bit faster than we expected," executive producer Carolyn Chambers said.

Due to be released in April, "The Sisters" has played at the Hollywood Film Festival, the Austin Film Festival, the Cleveland International Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. It won the Milagro Award at the Santa Fe Film Festival and was named Best Feature at the Sedona Film Festival, where it also won the Audience Choice Award. Arclight Films picked up the movie for worldwide distribution in February and plans to release it on April 14 in New York City. Eugene audiences should get a showing of their own in May, said Jim Callahan director of accounting services for Chambers Communications.

Directed by Arthur Allan Seidelman, "The Sisters" is inspired by the Anton Chekhov play, "The Three Sisters." The film stars Mary Stuart Masterson, Erika Christensen and Maria Bello with the support of Elizabeth Banks, Steven Culp, Eric McDormac, Allesandro Nevollo, Chris O'Donnell, Rip Torn and others. Two dozen local extras were used for the film, which was shot on the University of Oregon campus and at other locations in and around Eugene.

Dramatic career turn for 'Housewives' alum

There is life after death on "Desperate Housewives."

Steven Culp, who played doomed Rex Van De Kamp, has joined the cast of ABC's drama pilot "Traveler."

The thriller opens big with the bombing of a famous New York City art museum - which triggers a national-security emergency, not to mention millions of dollars in insurance claims.

The show is quite a departure from the soapy confines of "Housewives."

Culp, who played Marcia Cross' browbeaten husband whose peccadilloes included S&M, said in an interview late last year with the Daily News that he was looking for the anti-Rex.

He passed on numerous projects that would have had him playing "a married guy having sexual problems with his wife."

"I don't want to be this guy again so soon," he said.

Steven Culp, who played Rex Van De Kamp in the first season of ABC's "Desperate Housewives," has joined the network's drama pilot "Traveler."

Culp Lands in Thriller Pilot

Steven Culp, who played MACO leader "Major Hayes" in the third season of Enterprise, is used to seeing his characters killed off after one season. Similar to Hayes, his recent part in Desperate Housewives met an untimely death in the first season. But maybe he'll have better luck with a new pilot he's just been cast in for ABC.

The show is called Traveler, and it's a thriller about three Yale graduate students who become wrapped up in a national security emergency after one of them frames the other two for the bombing of a New York art museum, according to The Hollywood Reporter. No word yet on what part Culp will play, or when or if the series is slated to air.

Steven Culp ("The West Wing") is the latest addition to the drama pilot, about two friends (Matt Bomer, Logan Marshall-Green) who are framed as terrorists by someone they both thought was their friend (Aaron Stanford). No details were given about his character in the Warner Bros. Television/Jinks-Cohen Co.-based hour, which also stars Viola Davis. David Nutter is directing the project from a script by David Digilio with Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen also serving as executive producers.

At the Governor's Ball [...] I also ran into Steven Culp, the now-dead husband of Marcia Cross on the show.

Culp scored big-time reviews playing Bobby Kennedy in "Thirteen Days" against Kevin Costner, and was probably the best actor on "Housewives."

He's already gone back to movies and has plenty of work, but he did concede that he would have preferred to stay with the show.

"I wanted to stay, that's for sure," he said. "My career always seems to take me back to TV."

In case you missed it, he's had a recurring role on "The West Wing."

As for "Housewives," don't expect to see him back there anytime soon. There have been no plans to film flashbacks or ghost scenes. His character, Rex, is dead, dead, dead.

Steven Culp, a former Virginia Beach resident, was written out of the show when his character (Rex Van de Camp) died as he faced heart surgery. The poor guy was overdosed on potassium. He suspected his wife, Bree, but wrote her a note of forgiveness in his last moments.

Cherry killed off Culp's character, Rex Van de Kamp, last season. "Steven's storyline simply ended. I'm not worried about his future. He's a terrific actor who works constantly."

TV death stalks the mainstays

You don't need a sixth sense to see dead people. Just turn on the TV.

Prime-time series regulars have had a high mortality rate this season, especially during the May ratings sweeps period used by some local stations to set ad rates.

In the past week, viewers have seen the deaths of regulars from Desperate Housewives, NCIS and Smallville. The O.C. and Third Watch added to the toll earlier in May, and Housewives, Lost and CSI: Miami had high-profile fatalities earlier this season.

Housewives regular Steven Culp, whose Rex Van De Kamp succumbed Sunday, says he had a great time with the role and understands the high drama of death. "Part of this is sweeps mentality," he says.

Sunday's episode and one with the murder of Mrs. Huber were Housewives' most watched. "Actors should prepare for this, because I don't think the series regular is a sacrosanct entity anymore," Culp says.

Shows with big casts, such as Housewives or the 14-character Lost, can withstand the loss of a regular easier than smaller shows.

"Housewives" finale beats "Star Wars." ABC's cliffhanger draws 30 million versus 8.5 million for Fox's "Clones" telecast

Two teams of hard-boiled crime-solvers and an army of clones proved no match for the women of Wisteria Lane on Sunday. Desperate Housewives' first-season finale — which packed into 60 delicious minutes a surprising death, a murderous flashback, and a cliffhanger that leaves several characters in peril — drew 30.7 million viewers according to preliminary Nielsen ratings. (If you Tivo'd the episode and haven't watched it, stop reading now).

Housewives outpaced its three major network competitors combined, as both CBS and NBC chose to air repeats rather than risk sacrificing original programs against the Housewives juggernaut. Fox's airing of the film Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones pulled in 8.5 million, CBS' CSI repeat drew 11.5 million, and on NBC a repeat of Crossing Jordan drew 4.9 million.

A good chunk of viewers who watched Bree (Marcia Cross) get word that her husband Rex (Steven Culp) had died awaiting heart surgery — conspiracy theorists, note: we never actually saw Rex's corpse — stuck around for ABC's Grey's Anatomy. The freshman medical drama scored 22 million viewers in the overnight ratings, helping lead ABC to a victory for the night with an average 20.1 million coach potatoes.

Jul 2, 2004 After having shot the first pilot, ABC announced that Lee, Searles and Burke were to be replaced by Brenda Strong, Jesse Metcalfe and Steven Culp, respectively. While Lee was turned down after the producers had got to rethink the character of her role, Mary Alice, Searles was replaced because of the lack of chemistry between him and his onscreen lover, Eva Longoria.

Steven Culp had been the producers first choice for the part as Rex Van De Kamp, but as he had missed a meeting with the ABC executive to complete shooting for another television show, Star Trek: Enterprise, the part had been offered to Burke instead. Big Night for 'Days'

Steven Culp, Armyan Bernstein and writer David Self at the 'Thirteen Days' party.
HOLLYWOOD -- Resorting to gallows humor was the way the cast kept its energy high, confessed star Steven Culp at the preem of New Line's "Thirteen Days" on Tuesday at the Mann Village Theater in Westwood.

Head prankster and star Bruce Greenwood related one of the practical jokes he played on helmer Roger Donaldson.

"When Kevin (Costner) is in front of the White House during the big demonstration scene, I put on some regular clothes and stood in the crowd and kept walking back and forth with a sign saying 'Send the Gonzalez kid back to Cuba,' " Greenwood said. "They printed the shot, and everyone except Roger had seen it. When he saw it he screamed, 'Are you out of your mind, this is a million-dollar shot!' "

On a more serious note, Costner talked about how a historical pic will play with the generation of the presidential recount.

"Some people call it arrogance, or pettiness, but the code I have for choosing a movie is I know it will be watched five or 10 years from now," Costner said.

Joining the stars at the presidential-themed after-party at the UCLA Armand Hammer Museum were New Line's Bob Shaye, Michael DeLuca, Rolf Mittweg and Joe Nimziki; Beacon's Armyan Bernstein, Marc Abraham and Thomas Bliss; producer Peter Almond; and guests Lawrence Bender, Joely Fisher, Eriq LaSalle, Sam Neill, Erik Palladino and Alan Thicke.

The studio's wide release of the Kevin Costner historical drama "Thirteen Days," previously set for a crowded Dec. 22, is now planned for Jan. 12 (Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend).

"The marketplace is really crowded during that time," New Line distribution president David Tuckerman said of the abandoned date. "And they're all high-profile films."

Beginning Christmas Day, "Thirteen Days" will get a limited release for Academy Award consideration in four theaters each in Los Angeles and New York.

"Every review we've gotten has been spectacular, so a limited release for awards consideration just seemed like the right thing to do," Tuckerman said. "Every indication is that it's going to be on everyone's 10-best lists, so we feel we've got a shot at all the major awards."

Unlucky 'Thirteen'?

Somehow "Thirteen Days," directed by Roger Donaldson and staring Kevin Costner, Bruce Greenwood, Steven Culp and Dylan Baker, got lost in the Christmas and pre-Oscar shuffles.

What went wrong?

Made for about $75 million to $85 million and released on Christmas Day by New Line, the Cuban missile crisis drama pulled in just $34.5 million domestically and vanished with little fanfare.

Prolific producer Armyan Bernstein says it was poor timing.

"When you're disappointed, it's always easy to second-guess yourself," reflects Bernstein. "If we had opened the movie around the time of the presidential election, we might have seen different results -- for both the movie and the election."

Other sources suggest New Line, coming off of a bad year, may have dropped the ball in marketing the pic. But the film's poor showing reflects a wider problem in Hollywood.

As studios turn their attention toward crafting stories for the teen audience, notes Bernstein, adult dramas like "Thirteen Days" are becoming increasingly tricky to market and release.

"Movies like 'Thirteen Days' and 'The Insider' need big bear-hugs and cheerleaders," says Bernstein, whose producing credits include "Air Force One" and "The Hurricane." "There's not a lot of room in the marketplace for them.

"But how do you measure success? I am always going to place my bet on movies that are about something. 'Traffic' got there, and I am proud of the people who made it."

Steven Culp, who has twice portrayed Robert Kennedy ("Thirteen Days," "Norma Jean & Marilyn"), has nabbed a role in the Kevin Kline starrer "The Palace Thief." The Beacon/Universal Focus project, based on Ethan Canin's short story of the same name, centers around a prep school teacher (Kline) and his relationship with a troubled student. Culp also recently inked a deal to topline HBO/Cinemax's "How to Make a Monster." The film marks the fourth installment of the cabler's "Creature Features" series, which showcases five pics inspired by Sam Arkoff's sci-fi classics.

Culp, DuVall Make a Monster

Steven Culp (Thirteen Days) and Clea DuVall (Girl, Interrupted) will star in HBO/Cinemax's "How to Make a Monster" for writer-director George Huang (Swimming With Sharks). Production is slated to begin this week.

In addition, Tyler Mane ("X-Men"), Jason Marsden ("White Squall") and Karim Prince ("FreakyLinks") also will be featured in the project, which marks the fourth installment of "Creature Features," a series of five films inspired by Samuel Z. Arkoff's 1950s sci-fi monster classics.

Monster is about a company man (Culp) who hires three ex-cons-turned-computer programmers to create a computer game, Evilution, which centers on an evil monster. The men each have one month to come up with the scariest monster for the game, with the winner receiving $1 million. In their quest to win, the men load everything that is evil into the computer, causing it to overload, which brings the monster to life. DuVall plays the company's intern.

Special effects guru Stan Winston, Colleen Camp and Lou Arkoff are producing the series, each of which is budgeted in the $3 million range. Arkoff, Steve Eccelsine, Robyn Rosenfeld and Buddy Epstein are executive producing the series, and Winston is creating its special effects creatures.

Sony's Screen Gems holds home video and foreign distribution rights to the "Creature Features" series.

Culp is repped by the Paradigm Agency and manager Miriam Milgrom; DuVall by Innovative Artists and MJ Management; Mane by Meridian Artists Agency and manager David Ginsberg; Marsden by Cunningham-Escott-Dipene; and Prince by Don Buchwald and Associates and manager Calvin Mason."

Being Bobby

Steven Culp showed up at the Delancey Street screening room the other day still wearing his hair in that familiar Bobby Kennedy overgrown mop. Culp got used to the style while playing Bobby in "Thirteen Days." However, he no longer sports the false upper teeth he was fitted with for the movie. That would be too Kennedy-esque.

Friends from Culp's American Conservatory Theater days came to the screening. Culp starred in ACT's 1994 production of "Angels in America" as a Mormon in deep denial over his homosexual feelings. The process of preparing for that role or a Kennedy brother was the same. "You have to assimilate all this stuff about a person so it seems natural. The fact that there was so much material about Bobby made it easier. I had a point of reference."

Culp had appeared as Bobby before, in the HBO movie "Norma Jean and Marilyn, " as in Monroe. "I don't really think I look like him, so it's funny that I played him twice. It was really just a coincidence."

Culp Calls '13 Days' Training Tough

Steven Culp says getting ready to play Robert F. Kennedy in the Cuban missile crisis drama "Thirteen Days" was like going to boot camp.

"There was a month of preparation where I started working with a trainer who I worked with the entire time to get that really skinny, you know, wiry body, researching all day, working on the accent, watching films, you know, getting fitted for false teeth," he said recently.

Culp first played Bobby Kennedy in the 1996 TV movie "Norma Jean & Marilyn," but he said he doesn't want to make a career of becoming an RFK impersonator.

His previous films include "Nurse Betty" and "James and the Giant Peach."

Dec 21, 2000 (Variety, by Greg Reifsteck) Big night for 'Days': Greenwood ruins million-dollar shot

"When Kevin (Costner) is in front of the White House during the big demonstration scene, I put on some regular clothes and stood in the crowd and kept walking back and forth with a sign saying 'Send the Gonzalez kid back to Cuba,'" Greenwood said. "They printed the shot, and everyone except Roger had seen it. When he saw it he screamed, 'Are you out of your mind, this is a million-dollar shot!'"

On a more serious note, Costner talked about how a historical pic will play with the generation of the presidential recount.

"Some people call it arrogance, or pettiness, but the code I have for choosing a movie is I know it will be watched five or 10 years from now," Costner said.

Kevin Costner segues from appearing with the Kennedys -- JFK and Bobby -- in "Thirteen Days," a retelling of the Cuban Missile Crisis, to appear for Ethel Kennedy, Oct. 15 and 16.

Costner gets two days off from the film to play in Ethel Kennedy's 10th annual Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Golf Tourney in Hyannis Port. It supports the Memorial's inner city and human rights projects, the legacy of RFK's life and work. Two years ago, Ethel K. escorted Costner on a tour of the JFK library in Boston. He has since met with other Kennedy family members including Joe Jr. Coca-Cola and Nike sponsor the tourney, which raised $500,000 last year.

In "Thirteen Days," Costner plays Kenny O'Donnell who was a classmate of Bobby's at Harvard and became an aide to JFK -- he was plugged into everything transpiring during the Cuban crisis. Costner plays "everyman" who sees what is happening -- and who knows how close we came to a nuclear war. Although we know the outcome, the picture promises to be a nail-biter.

JFK is played by Bruce Greenwood ("Double Jeopardy") and Steven Culp (CBS' "Jag") plays Bobby Kennedy. Celeb golfers also attending include Alec Baldwin, Bill Murray, Frank Gifford, Peter Gallagher, Bill Russell and Rafer Johnson. And among other Kennedys to be there, RFK Jr. and daughter Rory whose documentary, "American Hollow" airs on HBO next month.
